Patient information
An Oral Medicine Specialist is a specialist dentist that is trained to diagnose and manage patients with disorders of the mouth and facial region, essentially as a "physician of the mouth."
An Oral Medicine Specialist has received additional specialised training and experience in the diagnosis and management of oral mucosal abnormalities ( e.g. growths, ulcers, infection, allergies, immune-mediated and autoimmune disorders, cancers), salivary gland disorders, temporomandibular disorders (problems with the jaw) and facial pain, taste and smell disorders; and recognition of the oral manifestations of systemic and infectious diseases.
No, you don’t need a referral.
However, if you are experiencing a new issue, it is recommended to see your dentist or GP to check that your problem falls within the scope of Oral Medicine to avoid an unnecessary consultation and costs.
A referral from your dentist or GP is also helpful to provide a summary of relevant past and current issues, and identifies a health care practitioner who will be responsible for your ongoing general care.
If you have seen an Oral Medicine specialist previously and are looking for a new provider, you do not need a referral. We will ask you to provide information relating to past investigations and treatments so that your transition of care is as smooth as possible.
Medicare does not provide a rebate for oral medicine treatment. However, you may be able to claim a rebate through your private health insurance fund depending on your policy.
Current as of 01 Feb 2025 for Dr Lim’s Bendigo clinic. Subject to change without notice. A quotation of fees will be provided prior to booking an appointment. Dental item numbers for private health insurance claims indicated in brackets.
